Wednesday July 04, 2007 APP SHOT : Locally-made RSS reader WANDA SLOAN There is not nearly enough of it, but Thai software always has been of consistently high quality, from the lovely Chula Word way, way back in the last century to, well, Mostz RSS.Mostz is by very nice folks who tell you right up front that you are free to copy and give it away, because "Mostz RSS: Live Edition is freeware." Sukij Tankitibutr, the developer, deserves credit for putting out a very nice RSS reader, and then for donating it to the Windows community, worldwide. I wasn't going to review another RSS reader for a while. It is a niche product and probably will remain so, because while more people are using RSS to get their news and opinions off the Internet, the bulk of them are doing it with quite nice new browsers, especially IE, Firefox and, now, even Safari.
There is not much unique about Mostz. I was not really happy with the installation process - partly because it didn't say where it was installing (in a separate folder under the root of C:\), partly because it asked me where to put the program when it meant the shortcut, and finally because I said start the program, and it didn't start. The program is smooth enough, handles new RSS feeds splendidly, downloads material from the web - I think - faster than any of the foreign readers I previously tested. When you get a headline you like, and click on it, the program opens the full story in your browser. This is a matter of taste, but I would like a choice to open it inside the reader. Mostz is a good, solid RSS reader that gets the feeds, alerts you when there is new stuff, and can be configured the way you like.
